I was just a-running on a beautiful blue-sky day in San Francisco, grandiose cottony clouds framing the bridges. And I was a-listenin. To Beyonce, Lady B is Crazy-Capital-C. I bought her Sasha Fierce album when I noticed I always tune in when I heard her on the radio. I found out, I already knew most of her songs on the album. I would always skip the ballads, because some of her runs kinda drive me nuts, they are so unleashed…(in part they drive me nuts because of the note choices, but mostly because I DON’T KNOW HOW TO UNLEASH quite like that, real talk). So I’m listening to “Heart Break Girl” while I’m cooling down. Beyonce is singing this ballad all mellow, ok, i’m checking her against my range, she’s got some fuller low notes but so far so good… AND THEN COMES THE BRIDGE and she just oh-so-simply trots up the modulation, ok, ok, i can still hit it, OH BAM THERE”S THE NOTE, only on my very good days cuold i hit it live, studio would be hit-or-miss, and she belts it, seeps it into a beautiful warbling head-voice of an “ooooh”… I had to rewind the track 4 times. I will be listening to that 20 seconds of music tonight, too, until I can ape her cascade of notes…. or until I give up :)
What I learned from the 2010 Grammys:
Study Beyonce. That voice is BEAST.
